Audio Recording: Child Protection and Parent Training Programs
The Brookings Institution hosted a program on
July 26 in Washington, D.C., to discuss
parent training programs and their effects on
children who come to the attention of the child
protection system. This event discussed
findings from the book, Child Protection:
Using Research to Improve Policy and
Practice. Chapin Hall Research Fellow and
book co-editor Fred Wulczyn moderated one
panel at the event.

Study Examines Local Differences in Racial Disparity in Foster Care Placement
In the first study to examine how racial
disparity in foster care placement differs
locally, a new Chapin Hall report looks at
placement rates in a cross section of urban
and rural counties. Researchers found that
disparity is lower in counties with high
poverty rates and a less educated adult
population.
The study also finds that African-American
infants are nearly three times more likely
than white infants to be placed in foster
care. This finding begins to explain the
overrepresentation of African-American
children in the nation's foster care systems.

Disparity in Foster Care Admissions, by

Report Evaluates Long-term Effects of Prevention and Early Intervention Services
Over several years, Chapin Hall researchers
will evaluate a system of prevention and
early intervention services in Palm Beach
County, Florida, that aims to promote and
support the healthy development and school
readiness of children from birth to 8 years
of age. The findings of the second-year
evaluation of the system show which family
characteristics are related to service use
and discuss challenges such as keeping
families involved in services over time.

Annual Report, by Julie Spielberger,
