Chicago

During the last 15 years, the geographic distribution of families with children has shifted from Chicago's central city to its outskirts, which has implications for public and private services. This public policy forum will present the findings of a new study, conducted by Chapin Hall for the Chicago Department of Children and Youth Services, designed to provide policy-makers and program planners with up-to-date information about demographic patterns and the characteristics of children and youth. It will provide participants with an opportunity to discuss what these neighborhood changes mean for organizations providing services to children across Chicago.

Speakers include:

  • Robert Goerge, Research Fellow, Chapin Hall Center for Children at the University of Chicago
  • Ricardo Estrada, Executive Director, Erie Neighborhood House
  • Giacomo Mancuso, former Director of School Demographics and Planning, Chicago Public Schools
  • Sylvia Puente, Director, Metropolitan Chicago Initiative, Institute for Latino Studies, University of Notre Dame
  • Vanessa Rich, Deputy Commissioner, Chicago Department of Children and Youth Services
  • Janet Smith, College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs, University of Illinois at Chicago
  • Sandra Thomas, Director, Office of Epidemiology, Chicago Department of Public Health
  • Moderator: John McCarron, writer on urban affairs and contributing columnist, Chicago Tribune
This event is funded in part by grants to the Chapin Hall Center for Children from The Joyce Foundation, the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Head Start, and the Chicago Department of Children and Youth Services.
