What makes an effective school in a high-poverty neighborhood? How do community factors, social service systems, and school leaders affect school performance? Join us for a public policy forum sponsored by Chapin Hall and the Urban Institute to discuss how schools, intermediary organizations, social services, and the school district can work together to improve educational outcomes for students in urban schools.

Speakers will discuss research comparing the effectiveness of schools in demographically different cities and explore how factors such as school leadership, parental involvement, neighborhood environment, and family issues affect student learning. The program will also explore how schools can work with social service systems and intermediaries to develop initiatives that contribute to academic success.

Speakers:

  • Cynthia Brunswick, Program Director, Chicago New Teacher Center
  • Beatriz Chu Clewell, Director, Program for Evaluation and Equity Research, Urban Institute
  • Bryan Samuels, Chief of Staff, Chicago Public Schools
  • Cheryl Smithgall, Research Fellow, Chapin Hall Center for Children at the University of Chicago
  • Moderator: Elizabeth Brackett, Correspondent, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, PBS
