Bridging Research, Policy and Practice |
|
| |
This group is examining the potential for relevant research findings to have an impact on policy, practice, and the well-being of children and youth. Most recently, the group developed a set of case studies that serve as examples of approaches to producing and disseminating the results of research that have had an observable impact on policy or practice, culminating in an edited volume, Research for Action: Cross-National Perspectives on Connecting Knowledge, Policy, and Practice for Children (Chaskin, R.J. and Rosenfeld, J.M., eds., Oxford University Press 2008). The group is currently designing some comparative prospective research on effective research and dissemination practice with an extended group of research centers that are members of the Childwatch International Research Network.

Child Welfare |
|
| |
This group seeks to establish an appropriate baseline of understanding for how different countries define child welfare systems and put them into practice. Most recently, the group focused on the issue of residential care and developed an edited volume, Residential Care of Children: Comparative Perspectives (Courtney, M.E. & Ivaniec, D. eds, Oxford University Press, 2008), that incorporates analysis of eight case studies and draws lessons from these cases to inform the debate in the international community about the future state and direction of residential care for children and youth.

Child and Youth Participation |
|
| |
This group has focused on developing a richer picture of child and youth experiences in a variety of contexts in order to better understand the impact of such experiences on a child's development. This group is exploring appropriate methods for involving children in policy research, understanding the ways in which social participation (or the lack thereof) contributes to individual and societal development, and examining the impact of policy on child and youth participation.

Ethics |
|
| |
This group has worked to address a recent upsurge of interest and activity in social policy research involving children and youth as direct participants in research studies and the need to capture children's perspectives when conducting research. Issues being explored range from matters of informed consent, to cross-cultural differing family circumstances, to the tensions between issues of confidentiality and a researcher's responsibility to protect children involved in research.

Evaluation |
|
| |
This group is focused on issues related to evaluation research as an effective tool for informing and improving policy and practice with particular focus on the relationship between theories of change, intervention, and research and the political and relational dynamics of evaluation research. Members of the group have presented case studies at recent international conferences and plan to identify a set of issues for comparison that could be developed into an edited volume for publication.
