Chapin Hall offers a postdoctoral researcher program to strengthen the intellectual and research qualifications of outstanding scholars interested in research careers focused on child, youth, and family well-being. Under the supervision of a Chapin Hall Fellow, the postdoctoral researcher receives advanced research training and mentoring, develops independent research ideas, and participates in educational exchanges with scholars at Chapin Hall and the University of Chicago.
Based at Chapin Hall's offices at the University of Chicago, the position has a two-year term, with a possible extension to a third year.
The postdoctoral researcher is paired with a Chapin Hall Research Fellow. Together they develop an annual plan that incorporates the following:
- Time, mentoring, and resources for the postdoctoral researcher to explore and develop their own research ideas
- Experiential training through participation on Chapin Hall research projects
- Opportunities for educational interactions with other scholars at Chapin Hall and the University of Chicago.
While participating in the program, postdoctoral researchers are expected to complete at least one peer-reviewed journal publication and develop at least one proposal.
Postdoctoral researchers receive $48,000 per calendar year and an opportunity to participate in the University of Chicago's benefits program.
Moving and housing expenses are the responsibility of the individual.
Selection Criteria
The program is open to individuals who have defended their dissertation or expect to receive their degree between December 31, 2006 and August 31, 2009.
Application
Interested candidates will need to submit the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae;
- A 5-7 page (1.5 line spacing) personal statement outlining completed research (including dissertation), work in progress, research interests, and professional goals;
- A scholarly writing sample (not to exceed 30 pages);
- The names and contact information for three references. Please note, the references provided by applicants who are selected for an interview may be asked to submit a written recommendation.
A selection committee composed of Chapin Hall's nationally recognized child policy researchers will review all materials and invite finalists to interview in December, 2008 - January, 2009. Decisions will be communicated in February-March, 2008. The individual must be able to begin the position by September, 2009.
