Chapin Hall generally pursues approximately 70 concurrent initiatives and projects. Listed below are selected examples of ongoing and recent Chapin Hall research activities.

  • Studies for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services focusing on such topics as the educational needs of children in foster care; pregnancy and parenting among youth in foster care; service factors related to reunification; intrastate differences in the likelihood of remaining in foster care past age 18; foster care adoption and adoption dissolution; and implementation of the Integrated Assessment Program


  • The largest longitudinal study of youth aging out of foster care since the passage of the 1999 John Chaffee Foster Care Independence Program, providing a comprehensive picture of how these young people are faring in the transition to adulthood


  • Examinations of racial disparities in the admission of children to foster care


  • Evaluations of a cluster of projects in Palm Beach County, Florida, designed to build an infrastructure of prevention and early intervention services to support the healthy development and school readiness of children from birth to 8 years of age


  • Evaluation of an initiative underway in 10 states that seeks to improve outcomes for drug-involved youth in the juvenile justice system


  • Analysis of demographic data to identify and project trends in the size and composition of the child population in Chicago's 77 neighborhoods, which explores the implications for social services, schools, early childhood education, and afterschool programs


  • A review of the evolution and evaluation of home visitation programs for newborns, assessing improvements in the design of these programs and establishing reasonable expectations for moving them forward


  • A study of the impact of Chicago's After School Matters on public high school students' attendance and academic achievement


  • Multiyear initiative examining Chicago high school students' perspectives of their out-of-school activities and factors influencing their participation


  • A series of studies on the role and approaches of philanthropy in promoting positive community change
